By 2020, the Canadian Appliance Service industry will require over 20,000 workers to keep up with demand. Many organizations, appliance service and HVAC companies, and pre-apprenticeship programs are doing everything they can to make sure that more women are included in this expansion.

For years the appliance service industry has been male-dominated. Research has found that so few women enter appliance servicing and HVAC trades, not because of a lack of interest, but because of minimal exposure to available opportunities.

Appliance Technical Institute of Canada has been in long-standing support of women in the appliance servicing and HVAC industry.

At a young age women are typically guided toward what was once considered more ‘traditional’ career paths, but in 2015, this is no longer the case. Several Canadian programs have been designed to inform women of the benefits of appliance servicing and HVAC careers, and some of these programs have even partnered with employers.

The Faculty of Applied Technology at Appliance Technical Institute of Canada Opens the Doors to Many Career Paths for Women.

The appliance servicing job market offers plenty of variety, so anyone can find a job that appeals to them. For those who are technically inclined, working as an HVAC mechanic or appliance technician are great options.

The appliance servicing industry has a wide range of positions to fill and it’s becoming much easier to find rewarding work within it. Individuals who are not inclined to start a new career from scratch might consider using their transferable skills, like those mastered in administrative positions, for example, to pursue a career in appliance servicing or HVAC office management.

The Faculty of Applied Technology at Appliance Technical Institute of Canada prepares students for a variety of jobs in the field. In fact, the best schools will even match students with employers who can offer them apprenticeship opportunities that best suit their specific career goals.

Workplaces Now Accommodate All Pros with Appliance Servicing Career Training

Since the appliance servicing and HVAC industry has recognized the advantages of a balanced and diverse workforce, many new policies and practices have emerged that allow companies to create a positive workplace environment for women.

Here are four changes you can look forward to once you’ve completed your Appliance Service Technician training:

  1. More employers are offering flexible hours to anyone with parenting responsibilities. This is particularly important if you are a mother who is considering going back to school for trades training.

  2. Many companies now produce safety equipment that is appropriate for both women and men.

  3. More and more work sites offer facilities like separate washrooms and changing rooms for women.

  4. Trades work places are now introducing diversity workshops and sensitivity training in order to help employees develop awareness of issues related to gender and cultural diversity.

With so many organizations, programs, and good practices geared towards motivating women to enter the construction industry, now is a great time to get started towards a rewarding career in the trades!
